Our client planned to develop a new restaurant on the first floor of a ten year old commercial building, located in the downtown area of Chicago, Illinois. The nine story building is composed of brick, glass, and metal. Our client wanted us to create an inventive design that accentuated their menu and craft beer focus. Their target audience is 20-50 year olds. As an American Bistro style restaurant, the establishment needed to radiate a natural and vintage style neighborhood joint.

A large piece of this project was the planning and sketching to make decisions on style and appearance. The majority of the areas created in our sketch up model were repeatedly sketched until we found the right solution for the client and the establishment.

The most researched space in hangry was the bar area. Through many sketched iterations, we finally decided to go with a back lit wood bar. However, we continued to struggle with the ceiling above the bar, wanting to include some acoustical qualities to combat its loud entertainment. We designed a cork acoustical piece, including different height cork pieces to give visual interest.
